THE EASIEST WAY TO fabric lettering designs

So a couple months ago I had a run of parties… like 3 in two weeks. Which for this stay at home mama is a LOT of partying! It was fun, but even more fun than getting out of my house and talking with real people? Ooohhh yes, party prep. I know- that’s how much of a nerd I am about this stuff you guys! So today I’m sharing some tips on making a GIANT wall hanging like this one we made for a party backdrop.
It’s cloth (I’ll give you 1 guess what it’s made out of), and it’s also perfect home decor. We gifted it to the mama to have for the baby’s room afterward since she liked it. This wall hanging is hand lettered- you could do any design you wanted really but the hard part is painting on fabric lettering designs without it taking you years to do something this big. If you’ve ever painted on fabric before, you’ll know it takes a lot of paint and it’s slow going to get all those little grooves filled in. So I’m going to introduce you to my secret weapon.
Ready to meet my new best friend? You will… but first, I should recommend that you sketch out your design first in pencil. I didn’t… because I’m the most impatient crafter on earth. I’m a ‘cut all the corners!’ type of crafter. So don’t follow my example, just do as I say, okay?
Ta-da! It’s a squeezy tube of paint. I know… not a magic wand. But what is so great about this is that it doesn’t pull up any of the fibres of the material (I used a drop cloth by the way) like a paint brush does. It also sits on top this way instead of soaking in like it would if you rubbed it in with a paint brush. I have recommended this type of technique before for lettering on felt BUT I’ve always used a refillable squeezy bottle… see where I’m going?
I found this one on clearance and it doesn’t look to be available online anywhere SO I did some digging and found a similar set of tips. I know you don’t need glass paint SO you can actually just get a package of the tips to replace any of your acrylic bottle tops. And leave them on there with a cap. Genius. On my shopping list.
I went through and fabric lettering designs the whole piece free hand (like I said, it would have been a good idea to mock up a design before hand, but as with most parties, I was under the gun) with a thinline look. I went back through and added the ‘faux’ calligraphy look by adding a second line and filling it in on all the downstrokes for a thicker look. I cut the canvas to size after I lettered, since I hadn’t drafted it out. I used a long piece of dowel (you can grab these at any hardware store) and hot glued the drop cloth around it for a finished look.
Also… can we just talk about how floral garlands are everything? And how much more special does this wall hanging look with a bit of color up there? Whimsical even ? I really love the way this one turned out, now I want to go even bigger! Is that a thing? Yes, yes it is.
