Mehndi is a form of skin decor while very popular in South Asia. Mehndi's decor became popular in the West in the late 1990s, where they are sometimes called henna tattoos. Henna is usually applied during special occasions such as weddings and festivals.

Usually drawn on the palms of the hands and feet, where the color will darken because the skin contains more than temporary binding keratin, on henna dye. Henna was originally used as a form of decoration especially for the bride.

The term henna tattoo is not accurate, as the tattoo is defined as the permanent insertion of the pigment under the skin, as opposed to the pigment resting on the surface as is the case with mehndi.
